Ask a Canadian: Curling

It’s totally true.

Curling owns, but there really is no good way to explain it, except to force someone to watch enough that they start figuring out what’s going on.  Next thing you know they’re planning their vacation around bonspiel season.

Oh Chris, so on the button with this one.

During the CBC coverage of the Olympics, there were segments produced called “How Tough is That Sport?” in which well known Canadian athletes tried out sports that were not their own to prove to us couch dwellers how tough something can be. 4 members of the Stanley Cup winning Calgary Flames met with the women’s silver medal team and made fools of themselves. Lanny MacD, was too funny. But the funniest bit was that the ladies talked about how you have to be in GOOD SHAPE. These players are super flexible and controlled, but looking back over Canada’s long curling history, most of these folks are about the shape of the rock itself–short and round through the middle bit.

When the ladies lost the gold, our house screamed. Like any other televised sport, we’ve had a crack at it, and now assume we could’ve thrown that last rock better. We were glued to the TV for every game. It’s not boring to me. Football is boring. 4 hours of coverage and most of that is advertising, and messing up my regularly scheduled programming, grrrrr!

    Great strip this week.

I almost cried when the Canadian women lost gold. It felt like it went from a practically certain Canadian victory to this perfect storm of missed Canadian shots/perfect Swedish shots so quickly it made my head spin.

We went curling once as a team morale event so I’m more familiar than most Americans. My favorite bit is sweeping. :-)

So it’s like the Office, Eh? :P I’ve actually been really curious about that, but since I live in TEXAS, there’s no real way to get exposure to it.

Haha, Thanks for paying tribute to the sport. I was one of those that mocked the sport, but now have played for six years. Curling is no more confusing to explain than football… LOL

I don’t understand how hard it is to explain that the game is like shuffleboard. Knock off the other person’s disks, and keep your own into the scoring zones. Sure, there’s MORE to it, like why most guys who won’t even touch a broom will gladly sweep to score, but it’s basically a big game of throwing rocks at other people’s rocks, on ice.

Love the Norwegian pants. Those things were my favorite part of the Olympics.

LOL! Mine too! What were they thinking!!??
