Warning Label

I remember this one time we were all over at my buddy Steve’s place, and someone wanted some sugar for their tea or coffee. He had some, but he suggested instead that the person just put in a few drops of some liquid in a little bottle that looked like it contained eye drops, except there was a picture of a plant on the side. He said it was an herbal sweetener called Stevia (no relation) that is 300 times sweeter than sugar but with no calories.
At that time, concerns about this sweet herb were still high enough that the bottle actually bore the warning “Do Not Ingest Internally”. We had a good time ribbing Steve about his “healthy” sweetener that was basically labeled “POISON”, but in the end, he was ahead of his time. Stevia is becoming more known and popular as an herbal sugar substitute around the world now, although in the US and Canada it is still technically considered a “dietary supplement” and not a “food additive”… so it’s only bad for you if you buy it from the wrong person, I suppose.

I love how their Guitar Hero is a board game.

And I love Ronnie’s T-shirt!
Stevia is interesting stuff. IIRC it’s a left-handed sugar–similar enough to fool your tastebuds but not similar enough to be digested.

My mom always shows up with some wacky herbal stuff, I always live in fear that the next time I turn on the news it’ll be one of those “This popular herbal supplment is probably killing you right now” exposes on whatever my mom promised would cure my cold, give me energy or boost my metabolism…
