The Great Over/Under Debate
November 19th, 2007 by Chris

I came home countless times to such a scene.

When it comes to the Great Over/Under Toilet Paper Debate, all my life (okay, from the time I realized there was a difference) I was staunchly an Over person. It just made sense! So much easier in a sleepy stupor, and the arguments it’s more sanitary are not without merit.

That was, until I got a cat, and discovered that Over = masses of toilet paper all over the floor. Science tells us* that a determined kitten can empty an entire toilet paper roll in 1 minute and 32 seconds. That wonderful Over position makes a new roll of toilet paper a far too tempting and easy target for a kitten in search of trouble.

Of course, when feeling particularly mischievous, and overdue for a nail clipping, going Under doesn’t preclude a kitten from making an awful, awful mess anyhow. Rather than unrolling into a mountain of cottony softness, sharp nails could shred that roll to pieces as it happily spins in place.

But then, I met my wife, and I quickly learned that we could not be together if I remained an Under person.

I renewed my vow of Over-ness, and it was worth it.

I suppose I should consider myself lucky that my cat only gets destructive when I’m actually at home? At least I have a chance to catch her in the act so that I can discipline her.

And I think the worst Susannah has done is poke a lot of holes in my shower curtain.

Over is the clear winner for ease of paper dispensing, which can only be a bad thing if you want to make dispensing harder for children or animals.

I was at some friends’ last night and their cat greeted me by leaping from the floor ONTO MY CHEST. While I was standing up. It is now more clear why they named it “Magnum.”

I will actually change the rolls in other people’s houses to ‘over’.
    Is this evil?

…I don’t care. They are wrong!
