Boldly, Baldly Go
October 22nd, 2007 by Chris

Back in the day, I was a pretty big Star Trek fan — specifically and especially a fan of Next Generation.

I was never as big a fan as my buddy Jon though (who recently got married! Congrats Jon and Ava!) but eventually he talked me into going with him to one of those infamous Star Trek conventions you hear so much about. And basically, everything you’ve heard is true!  This one was in Vancouver and Michael “Worf” Dorn was the special guest.  My favorite moment was when a guy in a Klingon uniform (and wearing glasses) got up and kept asking how the viewscreens on the bridge worked, until Mr. Dorn yelled “IT’S NOT REAL!”.

And yes, I bought a uniform.

And a funky Bajoran earring.

And I got Mr. Dorn to autograph a photo, which I still have, framed.

And I went back the following year to meet Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner. They were pretty entertaining, although their whole wacky banter thing seemed really scripted and fake.

I went back again the next year.  I forget who the special guest was, but what I do remember was that I realized that I was recognizing a lot of people who I had seen in previous years, and they were all strange and slightly scary.  But worse, I realized that I was becoming one of those people who frequents Star Trek Conventions! Was I being recognized too?!

I never went back.

    Great strip as usual.

I had a manger about 15 years ago who was a Trek fan and bald… damn if didn’t always refer to me as number 1 (because of the full beard). Things I do to keep a job.

OMG, he makes such a cute Picard!

  4. Honk AKA Dumo Says:

You know I’d make a good Number 1.

    Alternate Ending…

Honk takes off his hat and you see he has Riker hair and beard and suggests that Ronnie would make a better Ensign Crusher.

There now, you see how funny the life of a trekkie can be in comic form? Especially when it’s based on real life. This is why my brother Jim hates me for how I portray him in my comic. Oh well, this is a great one dude! Lovin the strip! Keep going! YAY Ronnie!

haha… i used to be a Trek fan to. TNG also. But that was about it. I liked the movies they made, and developed an affinity for the original series, but Deep Space Nine and the rest I thought sucked. So I returned to my first love - Star Wars! =)
